Seamus Gilmartin  December 2020

Picture
In December 2020 we were delighted to award our very first grant to Seamus Gilmartin. Seamus is a very talented rugby player who has played in the second row for Stirling County at every age group as well as the Caledonia region. Last year he captained Stirling and was selected to play for Scotland Under 16s but unfortunately a bad foot injury prevented him from playing.

Seamus’s life has been greatly impacted by cancer. When he was only nine years old his mother Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer, thankfully the cancer was successfully treated but just two years later Laura was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. While the leukemia is now in remission the treatment left Laura with significant nerve damage and reduced mobility. For the past five years Seamus has been a young carer, assisting his Mum with shopping, cooking and the administrative side of her OU Degree.

We were very pleased to be able to provide Seamus with a grant to assist in his physiotherapy and other costs associated with his recovery. We hope to see Seamus back on a rugby pitch, foot and Covid permitting, by the autumn of 2021!
Laura Gilmartin "The Murdoch family were very supportive of our situation and knowledgable about the ups and downs in sports for young people.   They really listened to Seamus’s story and the impact of cancer on his life and his role as a young carer. The award from the Trust has allowed us to organise the appropriate treatment and rehabilitation for Seamus."
